State today! We got there around 12:30 and chilled for a while, watched some races. We warmed up during the 4A race, and even got a little extra strides and stuff because someone parked their car on the course. The gun went off and I got great position. We were box 1 so going up the first hill I just chilled in the gutter and at the top I was already top10. Kept moving up and when we hit the big hill at about mile 1 I was in fourth and leading the chase pack with Casey, Connor, Adam Haynes, and a couple of my teammates. After mile 1 Camren Todd moved by me and I decided to take a risk and go with him. Going up the second hill I was still at the front of that pack, but then when we hit two miles things started to turn ugly. I tried to hang on to those guys but I just hit a wall mentally and physically. I started to fade and with 400 to go people just started passing me. Once Justin caught me I just told myself to hang with him and I ran with him until the finish and almost caught Dallin Leatham haha. I was pretty disappointed with my time and place, especially with how good I was doing with a mile to go, but I left it all out there so I can't be too mad at myself. I just need to race a little smarter during that middle mile, and mentally just grind out that last 800. Team got fourth, which was a bummer, but we were within striking distance of AF and Lehi if Zack and I race like we should have. This next month I am really going to buckle down and make these last couple xc races in my high school career count.

You mention the middle mile as what you need to work on. How about the first mile? You do that one more in control and it gives you the mental and physical energy to run the last one well. I'd say you were much too fast on the first mile, that impacts your last even more than the second mile.

Every person who has any knowledge of running is amazed by the stupidity of high school runners going out too fast. 90% of people in the first 800 have already messed themselves up by going out too fast.
